Course Title: Microanalysis of Therapeutic Dialogues

Course Length:  16 weeks, from  February 7, 2017 until May 29.

Cost and enrollment:
  • $650 Canadian dollars or $500 U.S. dollars, payable by January 13, 2017.
  • Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 15 participants
  • Registrations will be taken on a first-come first-served basis

Course Medium: This is a completely online course.

Course Instructors: Janet Bavelas, Peter De Jong, Sara Healing, and Sara Smock Jordan

Course Description:
We will be teaching participants how to put therapeutic dialogues under the microscope. Drawing on basic research on face-to-face dialogue, participants will learn to see the details of how dialogue proceeds moment by moment.  We will be analyzing familiar tools of therapists, such as their questions, their paraphrases and summaries, and their choice of positive versus negative content.  Participants will use microanalysis to directly observe the co-construction of understanding and new meanings between therapists and clients in a dialogue.

Although the focus is on therapeutic dialogues and we hope to include practitioners of different therapeutic approaches, we also welcome any others interested in analyzing the details of face-to-face dialogues, including researchers and medical or other practitioners.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Learn ELAN software and use it every week to analyze digitized video clips of therapy dialogues.
  • Learn about evidence-based research on face-to-face dialogue.
  • Observe dialogue from an interactional (vs. mentalistic) perspective.
  • Analyze the effects on the dialogue of therapist’s questions, paraphrasing, and choice of positive versus negative content.
  • Analyze the moment-by-moment co-construction of dialogue.
  • Apply this knowledge to your own practice, supervision, or research using microanalysis of therapeutic dialogues.

For an in depth look at the topics covered in this course, see Week by Week description.

Textbook/Materials

There are no textbooks for this course.  Sections of a published chapter on the method of microanalysis of face-to-face dialogue will often introduce each week's material, and there will be other assigned articles and reviews each week as well.  All course materials will be available for downloading from Dropbox.

Each week will include a video demonstration of how to do the week's assignment, also downloadable from Dropbox.

Course Requirements

General requirements:
  • Time commitment averaging 5-6 hours per week to complete weekly assignments
  • English proficiency
  • Regular access to a computer connected to the Internet.  (We recommend a high speed connection such as DSL or cable modem)
  • Some individuals prefer to have two monitors available when doing the exercises, while others prefer one monitor.
  • A Dropbox account with plenty of space to download and upload videos and ELAN files

During the course:
  • Each week you begin by reading an introduction to the week’s topic, completing assigned readings, and downloading the week’s video files and demonstration ELAN files.
  • You then do an assigned exercise, which requires you to apply the week's readings by doing your own microanalysis in ELAN and then answer questions about your analysis.
  • Finally, you post a comparison of your ELAN analysis to the posted file of another class member.

You will not be required to be online at the same time as others in the course.  Instead, you can complete your work at your convenience as long as you adhere to the following weekly schedule for uploading and posting completed assignments:

  1. By midnight every Saturday in your time zone, upload your completed exercise in ELAN and answer the assigned questions about it.

  1. By midnight every Monday in your time zone, post a comparison of your completed ELAN with another class member's analysis.
